Metals which are higher in the activity series have more affinity for oxygen than carbon.hence they are obtained by a process called electrolytic reduction.sodium is one such metal and is obtained by the electrolysis of their molten chloride s.the metals are deposited at the cathode,whereas chlorine is liberated at the anode .
The reactions are:
At cathode:Na + e- = Na
At anode 2cl- = cl2 +2e-
