Simple representation of energy flow in nature is called food chain.

Because the energy available to each level is only 10% of the energy that the lower level has available to it. After, the 3rd consumer there isn't that much energy left over.

"Food chain is a simple representation of energy flow in nature".

For example: A rat eats grains, a snake eats a rat, which in turn is eaten by an eagle.

In a food chain, the number of Tropic levels are limited to 4-5.This is because according to 10% law of energy transfer, only 10%of energy passes from one Tropic level to next. Thus the amount of energy decrease with successive Tropic levels. After five Tropic levels, existence with such negligible amount of energy.
