A food chain is a sequence flow of energy from a tropic level to next tropic level in the form of food . The number of tropic levels in a food chain should be limited because according to the 10% law as the no. of tropic levels increase the energy decreases.
The term "food chain" describes the sequence of events in an ecosystem where one living organism eats another organism, which is then eaten by a larger organism. A food chain is created by the transfer of nutrients and energy from one creature to another at various trophic levels.
The amount of food that is typically transported to the next trophic level is just 10% of what is available to it. After four trophic levels, there is very little usable energy left because as we ascend the tropics, the amount of available energy decreases. There are only 3 to 4 tropic levels in the food chain because of this.
A food chain is a network of links in a food web that runs in a linear form, from producer organisms (like grass or algae that make their own food through photosynthesis) to apex predators (like grizzly bears or killer whales), detritivores (like earthworms or woodlice), or decomposer species (such as fungi or bacteria). The relationship between organisms and the food they eat is also demonstrated through a food chain. The trophic level represented by each link in a food chain is different. Because the intricate web of feeding relationships between several animals is pooled in a food chain as opposed to a food web, the latter only follows a single animal at a time on a direct, linear path.Natural interconnections between food chains make it a food web.
Hence, the number of food chain is limited.
