Footstep and handspan both differ in different people. If this would be used as SI unit there would be a lot of confusion because if something is large for someone then it would be small for the other. So meter is used to remove this confusion.

The foot is a unit of length in the imperial and US customary systems of measurement. The size of the foot varies from person to person.if footsteps of two person are used to measure the length respectively, then two distance may not be equal.thus a foot length is not a constant quantity.hence it cannot be used as standard unit of measurment of length.
