It is the sum of atomic weight of the atoms in its molecular formula.Hence,molecular formula indicates the type and number of atoms present in molecule.

the formula mass of a molecule is the sum of mass of all atoms in it
ex: CO2 = C+ O(2)
C - 12
O(2) - 16 (2)
so its formula mass is 12 + 16(2) = 44
