Galvanized iron is iron metal or steel that is protected by a layer of Zinc metal. The is layer can be deposited electrochemically or by a method called hot dip galvanizing. The electrochemical method uses zinc in solution driven by an electrical current onto the item to be coated. Item being the electrode. Hot dip is just that the item to be coated is dipped in a bath of molten Zinc and when removed comes out is covered in Zinc metal. Usually the hot dip method provides a thicker coating of the Zinc and is more durable unless removed by physical abuse. With either method the Zinc may degrade over time due to the action of acids in the environment or carbolic acid in rain. This is the reason you will see old corrugated roofing that has started to rust: the Zinc has been dissolved by these acids and the iron/steel no longer has protection.
