General elections are those elections which are held in all constituencies at the same time, either on the same day or within a few days.

A midterm election refers to a type of election where the people can elect their representatives in the middle of the term of the executive or of another set of members.

When elections are held only for one constituency to fill the vacancy caused by death or resignation of a member, they are called by election.
