Gramin Sanchar Sewak Scheme was launched by former Indian Prime Minister A.B. Vajpayee in 2002 in India. It was launched with the intention of providing telecom services to rural India through wireless in local loop(WLL) technology. Through this service rural population was able to access public telephone.
The scheme was implemented by the delivery agents of Gramin Dak Sewaks of the Department of Posts. These agents were franchisee of BSNL.
The pilot project came at a cost of Rs 3 crore and covered about 8000 villages in 21 Telecom Circles throughout the country covering except Haryana, Andaman & Nicobar and Punjab.
