The term 'Green Revolution' refers to the renovation of agricultural practices beginning in the Mexico in 1940s. Because of its success in producing more agriculture products there, Green revolutions technologies spread worldwide in early 1960s. sigrificantly increases the amounts of calories produced per acre of agriculture.
This green transformation occurred as the result of programs of agricultural research ,extension and infrastructural development , instigated and largely funded by Rockefeller Foundation , along with Ford Foundation .
The Rockefeller and Ford Foundation jointly established IRRI ( The International Rice Research Institute ) in the Phillipines in 1960. USAID ( the U.S Agency for International Development ) became involved in subsidizing rural infrastructure development and fertilizer developments.
Why did India participate in the Green Movement ?
The world's worst recorded food disaster happened in 1943 in British-Ruled India . Known as Bengal Famine, an estimated 4 million people died of hunger that year alone in east - bengal presidency ( That today's Bangladesh ).
It was therefore natural that food security was a paramount item on India's free agenda. This awareness led to green revolution in India.
The term green revolution is a generally one that is applied to successful agricultural experiments in many third world countries . ( Third world countries are those countries which emerged after the end of world war 2 , which was neither in the power of USA as eastern nor in the power of RUSSIA as western ).
The Punjab is the first Indian state to be the try of new and crops , because of it's reliable water supply and a history of agriculture purposes . Green Movement also called as Agricultural Revolution.
There was 3 basic elements in the method of green revolution , they are :
- Continued expansion of farming areas.
- Double-cropping existing farmland.
- Using seeds with superior qualities known as HYV ( high yield value ) seeds.
