⇒The greenhouse effect is a natural process that warm the Earth’s surface. When the Sun’s energy reaches the Earth’s atmosphere, some of it is reflected back to space and the rest is absorbed and re-radiated by greenhouse gases.
Human actions have been adding greenhouse gases into the atmosphere all the time and that traps heat has increased. Therefore, more heat is being retained in the Earth’s atmosphere, thus raising the Earth’s average temperature. The gradual rise in the Earth’s average temperature is called global warming.
⇒ Effects of global warming
• Affect agriculture and food production, forest and wildlife.
• Melt ice in the polar regions and increase the sea level. This would submerge low-lying coastal regions and islands.
• Increase rainfall and occurrence of floods in some regions.
• Decrease rainfall in some other regions and cause frequent droughts.
