When an electric current is passed through a conductor, the conductor becomes hot after some time and produces heat. This happens due to the conversion of some amount of electric energy, passing through the conductor, into heat energy. This effectof electric current is called heating effect of electric current.

When electric current passes through a conductor, heat is generated.

The amount of heat generated is given by ,

h =   {i}^{2} r t

This is also known as Joule's law of heating.
