Heterosporous plant is described by morphologically divergent spores delivered from two kinds of sporangia: microspores, or male spores, and megaspores (macrospores), or female spores.
In pteridophytes, megaspores are normally bigger than microspores, however the inverse is valid in most seed plants.
The spores produce two types of gametophytes: microgametohpyte and megagametophyte.
These microgametophytes produce the male gametes and the megagametophytes produces the female gametes.
