The substances which on combustion produce energy (mostly heat), are known as "fuels".

Ideal fuels are the fuels which mainly have the following characteristic features -:

  • They should be easily available.

  • They should be economically feasible.

  • They should have an optimum (appropriate) Ignition Temperature.

  • They should be easily transportable.

  • They should not produce smoke on burning.

  • They should have a high calorific value.

  • They should not leave any residue after burning.

  • They should be easy to store.
