The longitude diametrically opposite to the Greenwich Meridian is numbered 180°E as well as 180°W .A peculiar situation arises at the longitude 180°.
While crossing 180° eastwards side toward America , a day is repeated because according to the longitudinal time 180°W is 24 hrs behind of 180°E.
When goes westward side a day is lost because 180°E is 24 hrs ahead of 180°W.
Thus, by agreement, the correction is made along the 180° longitude line. This is called international date line because date is changed whenever people cross this line by ships and aeroplanes.
The international date line passes through the Pacific ocean .It passes in somewhat in a manner of distorted line and in a zigzag manner.
