Ans:- Defination - Indian Standard  Time (IST) is the time zone for India  and Sri Lanka. ... The 82½*EAST longitude is considered as the standard Meridian  of India. The local time along this longitude is generally considered as the common time of India. This is known as Indian Standard  Time.

So 82"30 minutes east has been selected  as the Standard Meridian times of India. USA has 6 time zones at it has very vast area, it is not feasible with only one time zone. ... As Indian's longitudinal extent is from 68° 7' 53" E to 97° 24' 47" E.
