The time difference between the easternmost point of Arunachal Pradesh and westernmost point of Gujrat is almost two hours. For the sake of uniformity, the local time of 82 degree 30' E longitude, which runs almost midway through the country, is considered as the IST and this longitude is known as the standard meridian of India.
