The molecules in gas has the greatest amount of average kinetic energy as they can move freely and they have a lot of free spaces between them. Other states of matter like liquid and solid have lower average kinetic energy as they are closely packed together and do not have the ability to move freely. Why? To change a solid into a liquid or a liquid into a gas, energy is supplied to the molecules to break the bond between them and due to the principle of conservation of energy, you can’t create nor destroy energy. It can only be converted into another form. So the energy was converted from heat to kinetic. Thus, gas has the greatest amount of average kinetic energy.
