Explanation:

LATERAL INVERSION - DEFINITION

Lateral inversion is the effect produced by a plane mirror in reversing images from left to right. This is the reason why ambulance is written laterally inverted so that its image is aligned properly.

In the mirror the right appears left and the left appears right. Note that only sides are interchanged; the image does not appear upside down.

For example in the given figure ambulance is written opposite so as to be seen correctly in the mirror of the vehicle moving ahead.

The interchange of the left and right sides in the image of an object in a plane mirror is called lateral inversion.

In the image formation by plane mirror, the left side of the object appears to become the right side of the image and the right side appears to become the left side of image. This change of sides of an object and its mirror image is known as lateral inversion.
