When a ray of light incident obliquely on a parallel sided glass slab the emergent ray shifts laterally . The perpendicular distance between the direction of the incident ray and emergent ray is called “lateral shift’’.

the shift which takes place in the direction of incident ray when it emerges out of the glass slab is called lateral shift .in more simple term it is the parallell distance between the extended incident ray and  emergent ray .
