Answer:

Limited government means a government that has limited powers as opposed to the unlimited powers of dictators and medieval monarchs. After successfully overthrowing tyrannical British rule, the Continental Congress created the US Constitution with our new national government’s powers spelled out in Article II, Section 8. Certain other powers have been added by amendment, for example the 16th Amendment grants powers of taxation that were forbidden in the original Constitution. The 10th Amendment further limits the federal government’s powers by this clarification: All other powers are reserved to the States and the people respectively. That is the reason the President cannot send federal law enforcement into areas with out of control violence, arson and street shootings without being invited by the state of local governments. Our federal government today exercises many powers it has not been granted. The Supreme Court sometimes reverses laws it finds in violation but many times they go unchallenged or are otherwise circumvented. This is an important reason to ask questions such as this one to better understand our history and how our government should work to protect our freedoms.
