the substance which is present in the reaction in less quantity than schiometry value(less amount than req ) gets exhausted early in the reaction hence stopping the reaction hence it is called limiting agent

eg ch4+2o2=co2+2h2o

that is 1 mole of ch4 req 2 mole oxygen to burn completely

if we provide 1 mole oxygen some ch4 is left unburned

here o2 is limiting agent
