Self-government is a system in which the citizens of a country (or smaller political unit, such as a state) rule themselves and control their own affairs. Self-governments are free from external government control or outside political authority.

In other words, centralized governance from afar may not be as effective and meaningful as it should be in dealing with day-to-day affairs. So, a decentralized administration becomes inevitable. This is confined to the locality concerned though with limited powers deliberately delegated by governments for expediency. Such an arrangement may be termed as Local Self Government (LSG) as it is implemented through Panchayats, Municipalities and Corporations in India.
