, The marble cancer refers to the corrosion of building and statues made up of marbles by action of sulfuric acid and nitric acid. The SO2 and NOxpresent in pollution get deposited on these buildings. These oxides absorb moisture from the air and get converted into respective acids and cause corrosion. Also when it rains the oxides of sulfur and nitrogen present in air react with it to form acid rain. This rain when fall on the monuments result in their corrosion by dissolving the calcium present in marble to make salt. Marble cancer causes disintegration and yellowing of the building or statue. Taj Mahal is losing its white shine because of marble cancer.
