Menstruation is defined as the monthly bleeding that occurs in women, indicating the shedding of the uterine lining. This marks the beginning of puberty in women.

Step by step explanation:

There are four phases in a menstrual cycle:

1) Menstruation: during this phase, the elimination of the thickened lining of the endometrium or uterus takes place from the body through the vagina. This phase constitutes for approximately 3 days to a week every month.

2) Follicular phase: The follicular phase starts on the first day of menstruation and lasts till ovulation. It is stimulated by the hypothalamus, where the pituitary gland secretes FSH hormones. Every follicle stores approximately 1 egg. Every follicle matures into an egg. This phase occurs for 10 days in 28 days cycle. The growth of follicles, thickens the uterine lining gradually.

3) Ovulation:  This phase results in the release of mature egg from the surface of the ovary. It occurs in the mid- cycle , around 2 weeks or before the initiation of pregnancy.

4) Luteal Phase: The formation of corpus luteum, during the ovulation phase  is defined as the luteal phase. In case fertilized egg is implanted on lining of egg, it produces required hormones for maintaining the corpus luteum. Example human chorionic gonadotrophin (HCG). The corpus luteum produces increased level of progesterone required to maintain the thickness of the lining of uterus.
