When the female gametophyte (embryo sac) develops from a single megaspore, it is called monosporic development. Usually, in most angiosperms, the megaspore mother cell divides by meiosis to form four haploid megaspores arranged in a linear fashion.

When the Microspore Mother cell undergoes meiosis during the process of megasporogenesis, four megaspores are formed as the end product of megasporogenesis. In most of the cases, out of the four megaspores formed through megasporogenesis, only one megaspore remains functional and the other three megaspores degenerate. The one megaspore which remains functional, gets developed into the female gametophyte (also known as the embryo sac). Since, the embryo sac (the female gametophyte) here is formed from a single megaspore, the process of development is referred to as "Monosporic development".
