John Newland arranged the then known elements according to their increasing atomic masses.
He started with hydrogen having atomic mass 1 and ended with thorium which was the 56th element at that time.
When he arranged the elements in this manner he found out that the eight element had the property similar to that of the first.
He compared this to the octaves found in music and named them 'the law of octaves'.
