Optimum population is size of population that produces best results according to chosen targets.  

One text from 1926 presented single target as being the largest per capita income of consumers' goods possible under given conditions".  

Potential targets favoring lower levels of population are placed which includes long term sustainability, efficient operation of democracy and

preservation of personal freedom and preservation of biodiversity while potential targets of higher levels of population inclusive of abilities for preserving and fostering cultural diversity and helping social infrastructure.
