Answer: Osmosis is the movement of water molecules from a higher to lower concentration gradient through a partially permeable membrane. When the water potential is higher inside the animal cell rather than outside, water moves outside. The cell becomes hypertonic. For plants, when water leaves the cell, it becomes plasmolyzed. When there is no overall movement of water, we can say that the water potential is in equilibrium and both animal and plant cells remain isotonic. However, when the water potential is higher outside of the cell, water enters the cell. The vacuole in plant cells will fill up making the plant cell extremely turgid and stiff due to the cell will preventing it from bursting. On the other hand, when water enters an animal cell, it becomes hypotonic and can eventually burst due to the lack of the cell wall.
