Parthenogenesis means virgin birth. In parthenogenesis, the unfertilized egg is stimulated to undergo development. The organism produced by parthenogenesis is generally haploid, that is, it contains only one set of chromosomes, or half the no. of chromosomes. When such organisms produce gametes, meiotic cell division does not take place. This is because they are already haploid. Parthenogenesis is commonly in a wide variety of invertebrates, particularly in ants, bees and wasps.
