- They are mostly marine animals but some are found in freshwater
- They are stationary as they remain attached to the floor of the sea
- The body is porous with numerous pores and one large opening to allow the entry of water
- Examples: sponge, Venus' flower basket, barrel sponge and stove-pipe sponge
