A light wave that is vibrating in more than one plane is referred to as unpolarized light. ... Polarized light waves are light waves in which the vibrations occur in a single plane. The process of transforming unpolarized light into polarized light is known as polarization.

In a ordinary light wave the vibrations of the electric vector occur symmetrically in all possible directions in a plane perpendicular to the direction of propagation of the wave. When the light wave is incident on a tourmaline crystal, the vibrations of the electric vector of the light wave occur only in a single direction in a plane perpendicular to direction of propagation of wave (not in all directions). Such a wave is called linearly polarised wave and the phenomenon is "polarisation of light".
