In this policy, the britishers first created enmity among the rulers and then annexed their kingdoms.
They usually created enmity among Hindu and Muslim rulers by spreading communal feelings among the people.

The Britishers followed the policy of divide and rule, their policy was to pacify the chiefs and princes of the native state. they were being converted into loyal support of British raj . this was done to create a wall of separation between the Prince and the ordinary masses of the land.

further , the strength of the uprising lay in the Hindu Muslim unity. both Hindu & Muslim had combined against the hated foreigner. British view this development with alarm. soon after the revolt of 1857 Britishers turned against the Muslims. The consequence of the policy of divide & rule was that the princes turned against their own people and a rift started between Hindu & Muslims.
