Difference between primary and secondary cells. A primary cell cannot be recharged whereas a secondary cell can be recharged. In a primary cell chemical reaction is irreversible whereas in a secondary cell chemical reaction is reversible.

A rechargeable electric cell that converts chemical energy into electrical energy by a reversible chemical reaction. Also called storage cell .

Cells that are essentially utilized as primary cells, but are recharged after use rather than being discarded. Examples of these types of secondary cells primarily include portable consumer electronics and electric vehicles.

In the secondary cells, the reactions can be reversed by an external electrical energy source. Therefore, these cells can be recharged by passing electric current and used again and again. These are also celled storage cells. Examples of secondary cells are, lead storage battery and nickel – cadmium storage cell.
