A reference point in physics is a point in space, regardless of the type of geometry that you are using that stays still and does not move. ... A fixed point with respect to which a body changes its position is called referance point or origin.

A reference point is a place or object used for comparison to determine if something is in motion. An object is in motion if it changes position relative to a reference point. Objects that are fixed relative to Earth – such as a building, a tree, or a sign - make good reference points. An example of a reference point that is moving is when you look out the window of a car and notice that you are moving faster than the car next to you. The car next to you is moving, it is just moving slower than your car. You use that other car as a reference point to determine that your car is moving.
