petroleum is a mixture of solid, liquid and gaseous hydrocarbons.the process of separating these various constituents into useful substance is called refining it is done in a petroleum refinery.
petroleum is heated to a high temperature of around 400 degree C and vapours that are formed are introduced into a tall, cylindrical tower known as fractionating colomn which contain horizontal trays.the vapours that are formed inside the fractionating column cool and condense at various heights and get collected in different trays.the uncondensed hydrocarbons are released from the column.
