The Rowlatt Act was a legislative actpassed by the Imperial Legislative Council in London on March 10, 1919, indefinitely extending "emergency measures" enacted during the First World War in order to control public unrest and root out conspiracy in India.

It is an act that had been hurriedly passed in 1919 through the Imperial Legislative Council despite the United opposition of Indian members.

It gave the government enormous power to replace political activities and allowed detention of political Prisoner without trial of 2 years.
