when light is given to an atom or molecule it absorbs some energy and scatters remaining energy in all directions with different intensity.
this is called scattering and it depends on size of atom or molecule.
as the atmosphere containing more number of nitrogen and oxygen molecules, their size is compared to the wavelength of blue colour hence they absorb blue colour wavelength and scatters blue colour throughout the sky with different intensity.
