Single cell protein or SCP is an alternative method for raising the food items which are not effectively available.
As, we already know, Already more than 25% of human population is suffering from hunger (desire for food) and malnutrition (lack for food resources in the body). Both, the human as well as the animal population are drastically rising to a stupendous limit.
Conventional agricultural products of produce of cereals, pulses, vegetables and fruits would not be able to meet the rising demand of the food. Some convert to meat eaters (if eight energy requirement are not met) and some to vegetarians from meat eaters (vegans).

The raising demand and the search for a better alternative invented single cell protein. So, what is it?

Single cell protein are rich cell in biomass which is either used as a food or a feed to some animals. Earlier Spirulina, a cyanobacterium (blue-green algae) has been long used for humans as a food source and fodder for animals.
Microorganisms are commonly used in raising some fermented foods, such as, curd, cheese, butter, idli, bread (now don't stop eating them since I told you the names). A number of edible foods and fungi (such as mushroom) and blue green algae (such as Nostoc) are also know to the humans. So, nutrient rich microbes can also become an acceptable food form.
One such case is the 250 gram bacterium whose potential is quite high is known as Methylophilus methylotrophus which also see grown on organic wastes and are a type of single cell protein.
Some call it "gross" but they have actually already ate some of microbes such as yoghurt, everyone loves it, right? Now let me tell you they are also built on the process of fermentation using microbes. The industry for microbes has just begun.
