solenoid is hollow tube like structure which behaves like magnet when current passes.A closely bound cylindrical coil of insulated metallic wire. A current carrying solenoid behaves as an electromagnet. ... The strong magnetic field produced inside a solenoid can be used to magnetise a piece of magnetic material like soft iron when placed inside the coil.

What is meant by solenoid? How does a current carrying solenoid behave? Give its main use.

➢ Answer

A coil with many circular close turns of insulated copper wire (like a cylinder as shown above) is a solenoid. Solenoid is a coil wire in cylindrical form having insulated copper wire. It carry current acts like a magnet so that a movable core is drawn into the coil when a current flows. One end of such a solenoid behaves like the north pole and the other as a south pole. Therefore magnetic field due to current in the solenoid is similar to a bar magnet. A solenoid behaves like a bar magnet when a current is passed through it. It's one end of behaves as Magnetic North Pole and the other end as Magnetic South Pole.

  • It is used to form a temporary magnet called electromagnet as well as permanent magnet.
