An act of speaking one's thoughts aloud when by oneself or regardless of any hearers, especially by a character in a play.

In Shakepearan dramas, soliloquies were denoted by the word 'aside'. It helps the audience understand the character of the play in a better manner as he voices his thoughts out loud. These are thoughts that tell you things that the character is thinking firsthand without any adulteration of other people's (characters') thoughts and judgements.
