on 21st march and 23rd september direct rays of the sun fall on the equator. At this position neither of the poles is tilted towards the sun, so the whole earth experiences equal day and night. this is called an equinox.

there are two 2 types - summer and winter solstice

summer solstice- it takes place on 21 June when the northern hemisphere is tilted towards the sun. direct raya of the sun fall on the tropic of cancer. places beyond the arctic circle experience continous daylightr for about 6 months. this day has the longest day and shortest night.

winter solstice- it occurs on 22nd december when the southern hemisphere is tilted towards the sun. direct rays of the sun fall on the tropic of capricon. areas beyond the antarctic circle experience continous daylight for for about six months. this day has the longest night and shortest day
