The specific heat capacity is defined as the quantity of heat (J) absorbed per unit mass (kg) of the material when its temperature increases 1 K (or 1 °C), and its units are J/(kg K) or J/(kg °C).

Specific heat capacity of a body is "The amount of heat energy required to raise the temperature of a unit mass of a substance by 1°C (or 1K)"

It is mathematically expressed as:

S = ΔT×m/ΔQ

Where,

ΔQ=  Amount of heat energy supplied

m= Mass of the body

ΔT= Rise in temperature

NOTE:

  • Heat supplied to a substance during the change of state does not cause any rise in temperature because heat supplied is used to increase the potential energy
  • Energy is utilized in increasing the separation between the molecules as work is done against the attractive forces

Common Specific Heat Capacities (In, J/°C for 100 g)

Gold= 12.9, Copper= 38.5, Aluminum= 90.2
