it's the thick mucus which is coughed up from the lungs .

Explanation:

when there is an infection inside the lungs ,our body fights to that infection causing antigen.Then the mixture of immunoglobulins, glycoproteins, lipids ,water and other substances (depending upon the type of infection) is formed which we call as sputum or phlegm. In order to expel out all to get rid of the infection causing antigen our body cough out this mixture along with that particular antigen from the lungs.

basically this is produced by the respiratory system excluding the nasal passages.
