A strong acid is one that completely ionises in water to form a large amount of hydrogen ions whereas a weak acid only partially ionises in water and thus produces a small amount of hydrogen ions.

HCl, H₂SO₄, HNO₃are strong acids;

CH₃COOH, H₂CO₃, H₂SO₃ are weak acids.
