1. Louis XVI called a meeting of the Estates General, the political body which consisted of the representatives of the three estates to pass the proposal for increased taxation.In this meeting the representatives of the third estate demanded individual voting rights but the king refused to grant it. This made them annoyed and they walked out.

2. On 20 June 1789, The members of the Third Estate declared themselves as a National Assembly who represented the people and invited the nobles and the clergy to collaborate with them.The members took a solemn declaration to form a new Constitution for France.

3.On the other hand, the common masses was in tension. There was a grave shortage of bread. The angry mob of women after standing in long queues for hours broke into the bakery shops and looted the stock.

4.The people in Paris broke many buildings in search of weapons.The agitated crowd stormed and destroyed the royal prison at Bastille in 14th July,1789.

5.Rumours have spread in the countryside that the lords of the manor had hired persons to destroy the ripe crops of the peasants.This enraged common people who destroyed manorial houses and documents containing records of manorial dues , looted grains and even killed many nobles.
