surface area refers to the all sides of a figure. For example, take a room surface area includes all the sides but in lateral surface area, it includes only 4 sides of that room.

Surface area means sum of the areas of all 2D faces in a 3D shape. Including shapes present up, down or sides(lateral)
Lateral Surface area means sum of the areas of those 2D faces which are present at the sides (lateral) of a 3D shape
