There was a tenement running down and often over crowded apartment house especially in a poor section of big city.
2. More and more people started to crowd into American cities in the 19th century, including thousands of newly arrived immigrants looking for a better life. From 1800 to 1880 New York City doubled in population per decade. This led to the splitting of single family housing into different living spaces to satisfy the growing population.
3. Such small low-rise apartment buildings, also known as tenement, were too often crowded, badly constructed and lacked adequate ventilation and indoor plumbing.
4. In 1900, a full two-thirds of the New York city population lived in the tenement.
