terrible fish is referred to the old woman or the old lady in the poem Mirror by Sylvia plath. the terrible fish is compared to the old lady because when the lady grew older and older she just looks like a terrible fish . the slow but definite change in a person's life has been compared to a fish ,rising slowly from the depths of a lake . at greater depth the fish appearance is not clear however as it gradually swims upwards it becomes more visible . the rising fish is terrible ,probably because the woman fears old age and the challenges associated with it.
