The helical polypeptide chain undergoes coiling and folding to form a complex three-dimensional shape referred to as tertiary structure of proteins. These coiling and folding hide the non-polar amino acid chains in the interior of molecule and expose the polar side chains to the exterior. The tertiary structure is held together by the weak non-covalentinteracting formed between various parts of the polypeptide chain.

Dear Student,

● Tertiary structure of proteins -

  • It is 3-dimensional structure of protein characterized by single polypeptide chain with multiple secondary structures.
  • It is stabilized by bonds between side chains and side chains with peptide backbone.
  • Bonds involved are disulphide bridges, hydrogen bonds, ionic bonds, hydrophobic bonds.
  • It is destroyed during denaturation of proteins.

Thanks dear. Hope this helps you...
