The condition of scarcity of water for necessities like the domestic use or agricultural use is termed as drought. It is one of the disasters by which millions of Indians are affected.
EXPLANATION:
- When there is severe shortage of scarcity of water even for using it for necessities like for domestic use of drinking, washing, etc and also for using it for agricultural purposes then this condition is called drought.
- It is mainly caused when there is scanty rainfall for prolonged period of time. Other causes may be depletion of ground water or even the construction of dams in higher course of rivers.
- Every year, problem and danger of drought in India are increasing because due to climate change there is a change in rainfall pattern, and due to this some areas of the country are not receiving required rainfall.
- As most of the farming in India is still dependent on rainfall and rivers for irrigation, failure of rainfall directly causes the failure of crops which affects millions of farmers in country and also has side effects on country's economy.
- The excessive use and depletion of groundwater are also one of the reasons for drought. Also, construction of dams on higher course of rivers can lead to shortage of water in lower basin which if continued for long time can lead to condition of drought.
